When will
baby be allowed to feed at the breast and what can the
mother expect?
Until sucking ability develops in the premature baby, he
will be fed intravenously or by tube feedings. Once sucking
develops, mother can offer the breast even while baby is
being fed by tube. Research by Gene Cranston Anderson, PhD,
shows that babies who are allowed to suck while being tube
fed gain weight faster. Some medical personnel suggest
bottle feeding when baby’s ability to suck develops,
thinking that it will be easier for baby. In two separate
studies by Paula Meier, DNSc, it has been shown that
breastfeeding is easier and less stressful on baby. By
avoiding the need to change from one method to the other, it
also eliminates nipple confusion which can make it difficult
for baby to latch on and nurse well.
