Supporting the employed mother

If and when mother returns to work, she may become discouraged with the stress of schedules and fatigue as well as from being away from baby. Father can help by giving extra encouragement and reminding her of the gifts she is giving baby by breastfeeding and to them, as parents, by having a healthy child. Father can also lend a hand by taking on more of the household duties thus allowing mother time to relax and enjoy nursing and mothering baby during her non-working hours. Father may feel he can help by dropping off or picking up baby from the care provider. The mother needs to be encouraged to do this herself so baby can be nursed just prior to leaving for work and as soon as possible when she returns. Parents need to continue to communicate and may need to reset priorities while adjusting to this additional change.
